Insects play a very fundamental role in the balance of very many different ecosystems. They present a wide variety of benefits to human beings, and make work easier in some ways. However, insects can also be very dangerous and destructive to human beings and their environments too. Ranging from poisonous bites to being devastating pests, human beings have to develop ways to keep insects away from their environments.

Insect repellent is a substance that can be applied on different surfaces including the skin in order to keep insects and arthropods away. Repellents help in controlling and reducing outbreak of insect related diseases. These diseases include malaria, river blindness, Lyme disease, dengue fever, west Nile fever, bubonic plaque among others.

The risk of contracting insect-borne diseases is not the same in all people. Normally, certain places are prone to them in comparison to others. People in urban centers are less prone to such diseases compared to their rural counterparts. Most vector insects of these diseases like locations with water bodies so that they can lay their eggs in water. Such insects include tsetse flies, and mosquitoes. People living close such pools of water have to extra vigilante.

It is recommended to give due attention to ingredients in a product when shopping for repellants. Understand that ingredients are crucial in determination of the efficiency and safety of a product. Choose one that does not cause any medical condition after use. People with allergies to certain ingredients must also avoid products that can trigger reaction.

It is important to know the ingredients in such a product specifically if one encounters allergic reactions from coming into contact with some substances. There are some ingredients which have proved to have a high efficiency level than others. According to research products which contained lemon oil, deet, picaridin and eucalyptus have proved to be more efficient. The product may not specifically contain these ingredients but ingredients from the same category.

Besides checking for the ingredients in a product, one should also pay attention to the concentration of the various ingredients. Products that contain the same ingredients may be rated very differently. This is because the products contain different concentrations of the same ingredients. In addition to that, the form in which the product is available plays a big role too. Products that come in lotion form have been found to be less effective.

Reading the application instructions carefully before using the product is important. Most products are meant to be applied on clothing or open skin. It is not advisable to apply the product on skin that is under clothing and also one is advised to ensure they apply enough but not excess repellent.

Repellents should not be applied over irritated skin, wounds, or cuts. In other words, the product is meant for external use only, and should not find its way into the body or blood stream. Eyes and mouth should be avoided during application, and one should wash their hands thoroughly after use.
