A Prisoner Partition Is Not Just For Police Cars

By Jeffrey Jackson

Police vehicles are almost always equipped with a partition that separates the front seat from the back by a partition that restricts the contact that a prisoner can have with people in the front seat. It is an important safety feature to ensure that police officers remain safe in the front seats of their vehicles when they are transporting a prisoner separated by a prisoner partition in the back seat.

Partitions are made of metal and are specially fitted in the vehicle. They prevent someone in the back seat of a vehicle from reaching people in the front seat, and often extend the entire height of the vehicle when used by police. Some are fitted with metal mesh for strength, others with a strong clear material, and yet some others are made with a combination of both, sometimes with the option to slide one part to the side if needed.

These are not solely for use in police vehicles. There are other times that it make sense to separate the front and back seats of vehicles for the safety of the driver and the passengers and the use of a partition makes sense.

Most taxi cabs are fitted with a partition between the front and back seats. This keeps the driver working alone to remain safe while they transport passengers. Taxi drivers can be the target of robberies, and this is meant to protect them from this. The partitions in cabs do not prevent the driver and passengers from speaking to one another, and there is a small opening where the passenger can pass payment to the driver at the end of the trip. It allows the driver to be safe and secure no matter who the passenger is.

Another use is for people who transport animals, most often dogs, in their vehicles. Dogs can be very distracting and can get in the way of safe driving if not properly restrained. Even when placed in the back seat, if there is nothing to prevent them from jumping over into the front, it can be cause for concern. Installing a partition ensures that the driver will not be obstructed and that the pats will stay safe and out of the way in the back seat.

Contractors can benefit from installing a full type of partition. Often, they are transporting many tools and supplies that need to be easily accessible. Driving with these unsecured has the potential to be extremely dangerous when faced with a sudden stop or an accident, as tools and other items can be forced into the driver's area and cause injury. Installing a metal, floor to ceiling separator can help to ensure safety.

Another use can be in vehicles that are equipped to carry a wheelchair in the back. This also can pose a serious danger should there be an accident, but with the installation of a partition to prevent the wheelchair from being thrown forward, the driver and passengers can ride knowing they are much more safe.

A metal partition is not always used for the obvious. There are many other times that this type of installation is very useful and helps to safeguard the safety of drivers and their passengers in all types of vehicles.
