The Six Benefits Of Boronizing

By April Briggs

There are certain processes that metals have to go through in order to increase their efficiency. One of these processes is known as boronizing or boriding where the fifth element boron is introduced into metals. This process enables the right metals to be used in a variety of ways. Here is a look at the six advantages that metals have when they are enhanced.

Boriding is a process that diffuses boron into the metal so that it can withstand wear. This is one enhancement that is looked for because many times metals are scratched for a number of reasons and also have dents due to accidents. The harder the metal, the more difficult it is to create dents and scratches and even if they occur, it is not as damaging without it.

Under certain conditions, it is important for metals to be hardened so that they can be used more effectively. This means that metals like steel will be able to withstand extreme pressure from heat and can stand up to being used all the time. This applies parts that are used in machines that are used every day. If they are not hardened in some way they will not last.

Many metals are also used in situations that call for very high temperatures. Therefore, it is important that these materials are able to withstand the heat by remaining stable. Thermal stability is needed in a number of situations such as cooking and welding that uses heat. Manufacturing plants that use metals in extreme heat also need metal tools that can remain stable for long periods of time.

Resistance to corrosion by acids is reduced. Metals can be destroyed not only by wear but slowly by being exposed to certain chemicals such as acids. These acids can come from different places such as the air, earth, and also water. Rusting is usually the result of exposure to these elements and this causes the metal to weaken and fall apart over time.

Friction is another enhancement that is valuable in places where metals are used very often. This occurs when a moving object has a certain amount of force and moves against another object. The objects, in this case, are metals of various kinds that can be found again in machines. When the coefficient of friction is reduced it means that the level of friction is reduced.

Another issue that has to be dealt with is that of cold welding. This tends to occur in situations where it is not needed as in space ships. Cold welding is where two metals when in a vacuum, slide or stick against each other. If this were to occur on space ships and other equipment used in the same field, it could cause a number of problems.

Boriding is one of a number of processes that is used to enhanced metals so that they can perform more efficiently. This enhancement benefits all sectors of life including agriculture and the oil industry. The reality is that the best materials are those that have been blended with other elements which give the properties they would not have on their own.
