Disaster Evacuation Plans And Gear

By Eric Holm

t goes without saying that it is important to have emergency evacuation supplies and plans for both your home and your office. One never knows when an emergency may strike and it is best to have a clearly planned evacuation scenario in place. After all, what if the emergency struck in the middle of the night? Would you be at your sharpest, thinking clearly, being woken from a deep slumber to chaos? No. That is why you should think through disaster scenarios during a time of normalcy. What evacuation routes will you take? What precautions need to be in place? What supplies and tools should you have on hand and incorporate into your emergency evacuation plans?

Consider scheduling a type of meeting with your family and co workers to discuss an effective plan. Discuss the supplies that are relevant to a number of situations, as well as an escape route and an ideal meeting place for individuals to gather should they become separated. Remember to take into consideration all of the exits in the building and develop several different plans that will address all possible scenarios. For instance, contemplate all escape exits should a fire break out.

Part of your emergency plans should involve making sure you have good quality smoke alarms and that their batteries are changed often enough to ensure they are in optimal working condition.

Another very important type of alarm is known as a carbon monoxide detector. Many are not familiar with carbon monoxide. It is a silent and odorless gas that has the potential to be deadly, especially considering the fact that it is almost impossible to detect until it's too late. Be sure that all homes and offices have a few working detectors. Another important piece of equipment is a fire escape ladder, which can be crucial if a fire has trapped someone in a room or an isolated part of a building. Also be sure that there are many fire extinguishers and fire blankets at different areas of the building. This can be very important for stopping a small fire before it becomes a big one that can be much more devastating.

In summary, it is prudent to prepare your emergency evacuation supplies and plans in advance. You should have a plan in place for both your home and your office. Make sure all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are functioning. Equip your residence and office with fire extinguishers. Plan escape routes. Finally, review, revise, and update your emergency plan and supplies at least once every 6 months.
