Understanding The Processes Used In Aluminium Extrusion

By Jose Stewart

Aluminum Extrusion process is undertaken by several companies today which offer extruded products to buyers. The extrusion process is utilized in production. It is used to create parts of homogeneous cross-sections and is done by squeezing the material all the way through an outlet under high-pressure. Aluminium extrusion is popular all over the world since the metal is easily available on the earth's crust. Besides, aluminum is widely used in several applications, and it has numerous advantages as well.

The manufacturer will begin by removing the aluminium from deep within the earth's crust (either as bauxite ore or feldspar). Often, the Bayer's method, Wohler's method or Hall Heroult method is chosen to remove the metal in its molten form. It is then hardened and moulded into whatever shape the manufacturer desires. When the aluminum is extracted from the earth in its solid form, it will be passed through a number of mechanical processes that are designed to give the metal its desired shape. These processes include: rolling, drawing, forging, spinning, piercing and squeezing.

Usually, two types of mechanical working processes are employed by an aluminum extruder- hot working and cold working. In a hot working method, the billet is heated up to a temperature over 175 F, the recrystallization temperature of aluminum. At this high temperature, the metal is distorted easily, and new grains are produced. Then it is given the desired shape.

The squeezing and drawing process are almost parallel. In drawing method, aluminum is got through a die to lessen the diameter. To give cup and conically tapered shape, aluminum extruder utilizes a process known as deep drawing. Cylinder and seamless tube can also be formulated using this method. In squeezing, the heated billet is passed through an orifice under high pressure to give the proper shape.

There are several advantages to aluminum squeezing. Aluminum is a widely available metal, and through constant cross-section, several parts can be manufactured in the most reasonable way. The process of squeezing allows taking advantage of properties of aluminum and it expands. Thus, this manner indeed versatile as you can manufacture several shapes in just a simple process.

Once you are satisfied with the processes and methods utilized by a potential manufacturer of aluminum squeezings, you can begin submitting your orders with them. If, after your first delivery, you are still satisfied with the manufacturer based on the promptness of the order being filled and the quality of the aluminum that you receive, you can continue the relationship.

The direct squeezing process requires a ram and cylinder to dig the metal out of the die while in case of indirect squeezing; the extruded part is passed through the hollow ram under pressure. A mandrel is used to offer a shape to the inside of the tube in case of tube squeezing. Benefits of aluminum squeezing- It is comparatively costly to manufacture different shapes by welding. Construction companies always go for aluminum squeezing process for a number of advantages.

The company's manufacturing aluminum squeezings prefer squeezing process over welding as it gives product with constant cross section. The strength and lightweight (strength-to-weight ratio) of this metal makes it popular among customers. Its several other properties gives it edge over other metals. These are cost-effective, corrosion-resistive, flexible and durable.
