By Larry Walker

There are many different types of wood. It is one of the most used materials used in construction or in the making of furniture. Each and every one of them possesses characteristics; this is why they can be used in different purposes. They are normally classified into two types namely; hardwood and softwood. Softwood can be obtained from conifer trees whereas hardwood can be obtained from deciduous trees. There is another wood that is known for its grain pattern as well as rich colors that it possesses. Curly Koa wood is its name meaning brave or warrior. It might be one of the most famous and rare woods in the world. In some cultures it was considered as sacred.

One of the reasons behind its popularity is the fact that it possesses some amazing features; one such quality is the decorative curls. This unique property is the reason why even the value of this wood is high.

Its ability to be able to resist insects and rotting is among the reasons why it fetches such high market value. It is this among many other special qualities that timber dealers or even carpenters prefer to use this lumber to make different artefacts for instance furniture.

Of all the trees that grow in the forest, only one percent of these produce Koa wood. This is among the major reasons why it is extremely rare to locate. Although it causes a lot of tools to go blunt, its overall performance is fairly good.

Koa timber has been in use for a very long period of time. With its early uses, the users employed it to make bowls and carving tools, which served as knives by then. They were also used to make instrumental artefacts. Nowadays, the uses are not that in contrast. They are used to make tons of things such as furniture, boxes made from lumber just to mention a few.

It can be among the most costly woods in this world. This is because of certain factors. One of them being it only grows in a certain region and nowhere else. It only grows under weather conditions, which only that region can offer.

The other factor is that it may be uncommon. It can only be harvested from public land when it is either dead or decaying. It is seen as a sin to cut Koa that is still healthy and planted in a privately owned land. The practice is considered illegal and anyone found guilty of cutting the tress is at risk of facing serious legal penalties.

In addition, this tree possesses a rich historical background. Although its survival is not all that certain; it is a resource that can be enjoyed by future generations. This can only be made possible if the proper measures are put in place and take effect. Such measures would include to ensure that if one is cut another is planted to serve as a replacement. Conservation is the only way to go.
