What To Know About The Ancient Greece Persia War

By Michelle Miller

The Great War between Persia and Greek took place around 492 BC to 449 BC. During this period, the Persians had conquered quite some kingdoms, and they ruled many countries are stretching from Egypt to Africa to the whole of India in Asia Minor. At the time, the Greeks used to govern small states like the Athens and Sparta. Initially, the cities used to wage war against each other until they decided to unite and fight against one enemy the Persia in the forming what later was known as the Ancient Greece Persia wars.

The Ionians lived along the coast of the Turkey. However, the Persians conquered them. The Ionians did not like living under the new rule, and they asked for help from the Greek community. The Greek cities sent ships and weapons but the Ionians were defeated. As a way of making sure, that such an incident did not happen again, the Persian leader King Darius I decided to conquer the Greek Cities so that they can be put under control.

A king who spearheaded the fights against the Greeks came up with a massive army of soldiers that were more than the Greek army was. In the course of 490 BC, they encircled the Greek community and began fighting them. Nevertheless, in spite of the big soldier numbers that the Persians had, they misjudged the fighting ability of the Greeks. The Greeks lost their 192 soldiers but killed a number amounting to 6000 Persian soldiers of King Darius.

After the battle had been finished, the Greek army ran back 25 miles to their town, which was called Athens, to guard the Persian soldiers sent by King Darius from attacking them. This marked the origin of the marathon race.

A decade later around the 480 BC, King Darius I son known who was his successor, King Xerxes planned that he would take vengeance against the Greeks. He planned his battles by amassing a huge army consisting of over 200, 00 soldiers and over 1000 warship. The Greeks as a way of dealing with this put together a small force led by King Leonidas I of the Spartan and 300 Spartans.

They Greeks decided to launch their battle at Mt Thermopylae, which had a narrow passage where they were to attack the Persians. The Greeks lead the fight until the Persians discovered they can go round the mountain and beat the Greeks. When King Leonidas realized that they had been cornered, he asked the majority of his army to run for their lives. He decided to fight with even a fewer number but lost the battle as well as his life.

King Xerxes and his army went on matching. On arrival to the city of Athens, they found out that the town had been deserted and the people who resided there had fled. Nonetheless, the fleet of Athenians was waiting at the Salamis islands.

King Xerxes had already assumed victory since they had so many ships. On the contrary, the Athenians had small but very swift ships able to maneuver around. They maneuvered their way and made sure they sunk all the Persian ships forcing King Xerxes to lose and retreat.
