In most cases, discrepancies over land, disagreements over politics, desire for something another has or revenge are the causal effects of war. When it comes to the American Civil War for example, the fight had to deal with freedom and an end to slavery. Whereas, the Viet Nam war was one in which America had no direct relation other than to help others fight a long and bloody war, which many found unnecessary in the end.

After the Athenians had participated in the burning of Sardis in Persia, King Darius became extremely angry at the Athenians for doing so. At which time, acting out in revenge, a large army was sent to Hellespont in ancient Greece to march on Athens to acquire Grecian resources. While this was a case, the planned attack failed due to a storm which befell those which were to aid the Persian soldiers in the attack.

Unfortunately, while the Athenians sent troops to fight the Persians, the Persians had by that time fallen into a Civil War with divided interests and troops. As such, the Athenians while originally having provided some relief with water and other resources, then retreated so as to not become involved in the inner-conflict of the time.

Later, having no other choice, the Greeks returned to these battles which went on for quite some time. Then, once the Greeks finally sailed to Sestos, attacked and captured the place, the Athenians returned home. After which, a large number of artistic works and cultural endeavors were created. As such, in the end, while there were no real winners in the battle, the world gained a great deal of art and culture related to the period.

Online searches related to the period can often provide great insight to the different elements and battles.
