Why They Used To Say Reading Is Fundamental

By Barbara Morgan

Society is on the brink of losing colorful language, as young people are learning to spell using text speech without punctuation of any kind. This language of acronyms teaching us nothing, and is resulting in a general decline in the number of words we can use. Only through reading does a young person gain a grasp of colorful language, and proper spelling and use of words.

When a child reads they are learning new words, new ways to use colorful language, and it helps to improve their spelling and basic comprehension. It has long been known that newspapers are written at a sixth grade level. It is unacceptable that supposedly literate adults graduating from public schools find it challenging to read even the most basic newspaper articles.

Taking in a book on a rainy day can be like going on an adventure without ever leaving the room. Playing video games or watching television does not impact the creative imagination in a way that a good book can. Potential employers are not going to care what a young person watches or what games they play, but they will be effected by the presence of typographical errors on their resume.

Children who grow up around adults who read are more likely to be interested in engaging in this behavior themselves. It starts out as a way to interact with the parent, and eventually becomes a way the child makes their parents proud. As they enter their teen years, parents can encourage them by pretending certain books are taboo and stick them on the top shelf.

Having excellent skills in grammar, punctuation, and spelling in this day and age can most certainly grant a young person an edge over their peers. Being able to read well makes learning easier and more enjoyable for anyone. When learning becomes second nature and constant, then the chances of a young person desiring to pursue further education is increased.

A love of learning, whether a person decides to attend college or not, can only provide them with a richer, fuller life in the long term. There are many successful people out there who are self-made individuals. The self made man or woman is a modern day explorer who who never loses a love of learning, knowing, and doing new and exciting things in their life.

The Internet is an excellent tool for anyone to utilize in the pursuit of knowledge. However, it appears that gaming, pornography, and basic nonsense posing as comedy is the only thing that people pursue on this World Wide Web anymore. Our brains are no different than our bodies when it comes to garbage in, garbage out, and this fact is clearly seen throughout society.

If this continues, we face becoming a society without writers, poets, or thinkers of any kind. The future generations have been spoon fed games that increase adrenaline rather than intelligence. It causes one who thinks to stop and ponder what sort of society will spring forward from the dredges of a society that put more importance on entertainment than education.
