Twin Screw Pumps In Multiphase Pumping Technologies

By Laura Smith

Pumps are used for moving fluids, such as liquids, slurries, or gases. Three major groups of this are the displacement, direct lift, and gravity pumps. Positive displacement transfers fluid by trapping a fixed amount of it then displacing that amount into the discharge pipe.

Gravity pumps are referred to as hydraulic rams. These work by getting water from under grounds and raising it to higher places but in lower elevations. Multiphase pumping technologies have features and types namely the helicoaxial, progressive cavity, twin screw pumps, buffer tanks, and electric submersibles. Multiphase production benefits include smaller and simpler installation, production rate increase, and lower cost of equipment.

Centrifugal is another term for helicoaxial. This works by the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to hydrodynamic energy to transport fluids. Rotational energy is coming from the electric motor. The fluid enters the impeller near its rotating axis, and impeller will be accelerating it towards the exit.

A twin screw is made up of two screws that pushes the fluid movement which is being pumped. Pumping conditions like having a high volume of gas or fluctuated inlet conditions are commonly used. Four mechanical seals are needed to seal these two shafts.

Progressive cavity is one type of the positive displacement. Sequence progress of small, fixed shape, discrete cavities is used in this type while the rotor is turned. This also acts as motor or mud motor if the solution is being pumped through the interior. Well drilling can be one good application for this.

Electric submersibles contain hermetically sealed motor that is close coupled to its pump. The assembly is being submerged to the fluid which is being pumped. The advantage of this is the prevention of cavities, that is a problem in the difference of the fluid surface and of the pump. Submersibles pump liquids towards the surface. Jets pulls liquids out from the surface, so it can be concluded that submersibles are more efficient compared to jets.

Buffer tanks Cobourg ON are installed upstream of suction nozzle in case of a slug flow. This will break the energy of the liquid slug, will smoothen any fluctuations of incoming flows, and will act as a sand trap. Pumps are usually rated by horsepower, flow rate, outlet pressure of head, and inlet suction of head. Simplification of head is done as the number of feet the pump can raise or lower a column of water in atmospheric pressure.

Cast iron, stainless steel, and other materials are commonly used in pumps. Materials that will be used will be dependent on how it is to be applied. Water industries in pharma application uses stainless steel because it provides better result, and this is because of its high temperature.

Because of the name, multiphase, it involves many variations of its conditions and services which includes changing processes of liquid composition, operation of high and low pressures, temperature variations, and abrasive or erosive media exposure. And the challenge now is selecting the suitable arrangement of support system and mechanical seals in order to know its effectiveness.
