Types Of Clothing Labels And Their Uses

By Donald Johnson

Labeling is used for almost every product in the market. To some companies, it acts as a marketing tool to show the quality of the item so as, to gain more profits by increasing sales. To label textiles and garments, Clothing Labels are the best option. They can be used by the garment industry and designers who work at home. Sticking on the labels is fairly easy and can be done at home.

A few functions of such a label used in clothes include indicating the size that is small, medium or large, the fabric used to make the cloth like silk, cotton or wool. The label also has some instructions to guide you on washing the garment. A few designers or manufacturers also prefer to place their signature and name on these labels of the garment.

Different tags are placed at different positions on the cloth. The labels are placed either inside or outside the garment. Those that show the size are placed on the inside of the back of clothes. Those showing the wash care instructions are at the side of the cloth on the inside. For manufacturer or designer details and brand name, they are placed on the outside of the cloth. This is a marketing strategy by placing the label outside.

Different types of labels are available depending on the function of the label. They are of four main types, brand labels to show the designer or manufacturer, size labels showing a large, small or medium size of the garment, content tags showing the material used in making the garment and lastly the care label to show the owner how to handle cleaning the garment.

Another means of categorizing the tags is through using the means used to display the information. It is of two types printed and woven. In printed tags, the information is printed onto the tag using a permanent ink. The material is often made of cotton or a synthetic material like polyester, nylon or satin to allow the ink printing.

The woven tags are woven thus reducing the chances of fading on the label. However, the material used to make them are silk and damask which are costly as compared to other materials like cotton. This makes the production of these tags costly. This type of label is thus commonly used in high-quality garments due to their high durability.

The last category of a label is according to the attachment of the label onto the clothes. There are three main ways of attaching on the tags. The stick on method is the fastest and cannot be removed when washing. Sew-on types use heat activated adhesive to stick onto the cloth while the last category sew-on types are easily sewed onto the cloth.

For any company, school or home designer looking for a label, there are many options to choose from. They are available in most online stores and often will come at a discount. Those who want uniquely designed tags can apply for the custom tags. The label will also help home designers sell and market their designers.
