The Proper Way On How To Hold A Violin Correctly

By Iva Cannon

When choosing an instrument for the first time being aware of the important factors in the handling of the instrument that need to be executed is always a must. Learning the proper way on how to hold a violin correctly will ensure that beautiful music will be made. The physical demands and mental awareness are very important factors when choosing this particular instrument.

Once posture has been established, shoulder rests and hand mechanics should be examined. The instrument should rest on the collarbone and be supported by the musicians left hand. To stabilize the violin the musician should use gentle weight from the head while applying the chin to the chin rest. This is the first step in learning how to hold a violin properly.

Once the proper posture is established the next very important factor is to understand where hand mechanics come into play and the proper positioning of the shoulder rests. The hand mechanics and the shoulder rest provide stabilization for this instrument. This stabilization is accomplished by using gentle weight from the head while applying the chin to the rest. The left hand and the collarbone are the points of contact.

To improve the overall function of the instrument and to provide more comfort for the player the positioning of the shoulder pads is another important factor to be addressed. The shoulder pad helps to keep the instrument in its proper place by adding friction. This way the musician does not have to worry about the violin slipping while it is being played. Musicians have two types of shoulder pads to choose from. The first form is a basic cloth that has a non-slip coating and the other type is chamois skin.

After all of these factors have been assessed it is now time to begin holding the violin. When handling there should always be two stable points of contact. The first is resting lightly on the musicians collarbone. The second is the jaw gently place on the chin rest. Once this position is established, the base of the index finger on the left hand should rest gently on the neck of the instrument. This finger will provide most of the support for the neck portion of the instrument. The side of the left thumb should also provide enough pressure so it does not slip out of place.

Once posture and the positioning of the shoulder pads and chin rests have been established it is now time to begin holding the instrument. An important thing to remember is this instrument requires two stable points of contact. These stable points of contact are the musicians collarbone and players jaw. These stable points of contact will help to hold the violin in place so the musician can focus on playing.

When holding this particular instrument, the strings should be parallel to the floor, making sure the shoulders and hands are in the proper position. To assure that the musician is fully prepared to play some students of this art prefer to walk around just holding the violin, adjusting the positioning as needed.

As with any type of music this requires research and practice to become a master of this art. Once established though the end results will be well worth all of the time and effort.

The art of playing the violin takes practice and patience. The end result will be worth the time and effort that is put into making harmonious music.
